FOTO GAGIN and PHOTOGRAPHY CULTURE of IZMIR
This book is based on a long-term and comprehensive research on Aleksandro Gagin, a master of photography who made significant contributions to studio photography in Izmir from the Late Ottoman Empire until 1951 and witnessed the Early Republican Period, and his photography studio Foto Gagin. Aleksandro Gagin is one of the photographers who built the history and culture of Izmir Photography thanks to his identity as a photographer, the image archive he produced with the Foto Gagin stamp and the valuable visual heritage he left behind. The three authors presented the results of this research from 2018 to 2021 at the Memory Studies Association Conference in Warsaw in July 2021. The book focuses on Foto Gagin, the studio Aleksandro Gagin founded in Karataş, and from this point of view, it tells the personal and professional life of Gagin; the Jewish culture in Izmir based on his Jewish identity and photographs; and the common life, neighborhood relations and friendships of the Muslim and Jewish communities in and around Karataş.
We are happy to meet the readers with ‘Foto Gagin and Photography Culture of Izmir’ in the 185th anniversary of the discovery of photography.
